Story:
“Gully Boy” is a film about “Murad”, a 22-year-old boy from a ghetto in Mumbai, India. The son of a driver, his parents worked hard to educate him so that he could take up a white-collar job. Meanwhile, Murad learns that he is a rapper. Authentic hip hop in India is a recent phenomenon and is rising from the streets, like anywhere else in the world. Art is a distant dream for India’s colonized poor and the story is about Murad’s journey to realize his love for rap and unknowingly chase the dream of surpassing his class. The film depicts street rap from the cracks of the streets of Mumbai. The poem is mindful of the socio-economic fabric of the city and highlights the challenges faced by the underprivileged youth in the minority population.
