Hank Palmer is a hotshot attorney in Chicago who has successfully made a name for himself in the legal world. However, when he receives news that his mother has passed away, he must return to his hometown of Carlinville, Indiana, for her funeral. Before leaving, Hank argues with his wife, Lisa, whom he is divorcing because of her infidelity and neglect.
Once in Carlinville, Hank is reunited with his older brother Glenn, who owns a tire shop, and his younger brother Dale, who is mentally challenged. However, his relationship with his father, Judge Joseph Palmer, remains estranged. Hank’s father had treated him harshly when he was young, particularly in response to a car accident Hank had caused at age 17 that ruined Glenn’s career prospects in Major League Baseball. Instead of community service or other forms of assistance, the judge sent Hank to juvenile detention.
During one of his father’s cases, Hank notices that the judge is momentarily confused and unable to remember his bailiff’s name. After the funeral, Hank confronts his father about the damaged headlights and fenders on his car, accusing him of drunk driving. The judge denied knowledge of any accident. Hank’s ex-girlfriend, Sam Powell, complicates matters when she learns from his daughter, Carla, that he may be the girl’s father. However, Sam reveals that Glenn is actually Carla’s father, as she briefly slept with him when Hank left Carlinville years ago.
Hank, frustrated with his father and strained family relations, decides to leave for the airport and vows never to return to Carlinville. But just as he’s about to board his flight, Glenn calls to tell him that their father is a suspect in a hit-and-run accident that killed recently released ex-convict Mark Blackwell. . The judge had previously sentenced Blackwell to twenty years in prison for a murder he committed when the judge gave him a lighter sentence for shooting him in the victim’s home.
Despite their difficult relationship, Hank decides to stay and help his father. He begins an investigation into the hit-and-run accident, and comes across evidence that suggests the judge may not be guilty. Along the way, Hank is also reunited with Sam and his daughter Carla, and he tries to make amends with his family. Despite the odds against him, Hank is determined to prove his father’s innocence and redeem their relationship.
